Polhograjski Dolomiti

Polhov Gradec Dolomites, also called the Polhov Gradec Hills, is a Slovenian geographical region that borders on the slightly higher Škofja Loka Hills to the north and the Ljubljana basin and Ljubljana marshes to the south. You can reach them from different parts of Medvode. One option is to start across the Golo brdo hill (Slavkov dom Restaurant), continuing by foot towards the Katarina. The second route leads through Žlebe (Church of St. Margaret built in 1511), from where you can continue by foot towards Katarina and further on towards the Polhov Gradec Dolomites. If you want to reach the centre of the Polhov Gradec Dolomites by car, your direction should be Medvode – Sora – Katarina. You can park the car in the Topol village and continue towards different peaks on foot. A shaded path leads to the foothills of Grmada, transforming into the easiest trail to its peak. In May, the slopes of Grmada are full of Blagay’s daphne flowers (daphne blagayana). On the way back, make sure to stop at the Gonte farm, the doors of which are always open. From there, if you still have the strength, you can reach the top of Tošč (1021 m) – the highest peak of the Polhov Gradec Dolomites – in a good half an hour.

The diverse pre-Alpine landscape west of Ljubljana is famous for its sharp peaks, beautiful views and rich vegetation. The ridge tops – Grmada (898 m), forest-covered Tošč (1021 m), pleasant Sv. Jakob (806 m), Rog (798 m), mysterious and historical Jeterbenk (774 m), Govejek (730 m) and Osolnik (857 m) – call you out on panoramic hikes with wonderful views of the Škofja Loka Hills, the Kamnik – Savinja Alps, the Sora plain, the Ljubljana basin and all the way towards the Notranjska region.

Here you can meet the chamois goats and the mouflon sheep, and the lonely woods give shelter to the protected western capercaillie.
